The dentin is a tissue formed of mineral salts and organic material. The mineral salts are calcium salts in the form of hydroxylapatite crystals. The dentin is found to be traversed by innumerable parallel tubules, which are called as dentinal tubules. Dentinal tubules contain a substance produced by the stem cells, known as odontoblasts. Odontoblasts are present both in the pulp and in the dentin. Odontoblasts are constant source of dental tissue.
Due to its physical properties, dentin has an elastic quality that is important for the correct function of a tooth, as it provides flexibility necessary to avoid fracture of the fragile overlying enamel.
The dentin is intermediate layer of the tooth which lies between outer hard surface called the enamel and inner soft tissues called the pulp. Dentin is harder than the pulp but less harder than the enamel.
